Leader Training

Submitted by Cubmaster on Fri, 2005/09/02 - 5:38pm.

All new leaders should take the online "Fast Start" and "Youth Protection" courses. Then head over to the district web site to sign up for "New Leader Essentials" (NLE) and "Leader Specific Training" (LST) for your new role.

Existing leaders who are moving into new roles should also plan to attend the appropriate "Leader Specific" class. We also need MANY people in the pack to take BALOO training so we can be sure to have the trained leaders we need to plan and conduct Pack campouts!

Pack 140 is committed to having 100% of our registered leaders receive proper training for their position. When leaders understand the whys and hows of Cub Scouting, they are more effective in their roles. Leaders should complete the following courses:

  • Cub Scout Leader Fast Start Training (online)
  • New Leader Essentials (NLE)
  • Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (LST)
  • Youth Protection Training (online)

We also need leaders and other adult family members to take the outdoor skills classes so that we can go camping!

  • Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
  • Webelos Outdoor Leader Skills (OWL)

Class Registration
Class registration for the NLE, LST, and BALOO training classes is available online on the Tomahawk District web site at www.tomahawkcac.org. An offline registration form and information sheet is attached at the bottom of this article.

Cub Scout Leader Fast Start Training
This course should be your first stop as a new Cub Scout leader. Here you will learn more about the Cub Scout program and get the information you need to run your first meeting confidently. It should take you only 15 to 20 minutes to complete this training. If you are an experienced leader taking over a new responsibility, you will also find valuable information here for you. Fast Start Training is available online, as a CDROM, and on VHS video. Please contact the Cubmaster if you need one of the other formats.

New Leader Essentials (NLE)
This course is an introductory session that highlights the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these aims and methods are reached in an age-appropriate style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing. Videos, discussions, and hands-on reinforcement are presented during the 90-minute training session. NLE is typically offered in the fall and spring. Please refer to the Pack 140 calendar for dates and times.

Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (LST)
Not one, but five different role-specific courses for Tiger Cub den leaders, Cub Scout den leaders, Webelos den leaders, Cubmasters, and pack committee members. The courses combine video, examples, and exercises to prepare leaders for their specific role in the Pack. LST is typically offered in the fall and spring and can be completed in about three hours. Please refer to the Pack 140 calendar for dates and times.

Youth Protection
This training is an important component of the Boy Scouts of America's strategy to protect its members from child abuse. Child abuse is a serious problem in the American society. There are over 3 million reported cases of child abuse each year, including a half a million cases of child sexual abuse. The BSA has developed a set of rules and an effective plan that every adult leader must follow to protect both themselves and the youth participants. As of Spring 2006, Youth Protection training is only available online. When you take the class online, please print the certificate at the end of the course and turn it in to the Pack training coordinator so that you can receive credit. This certificate is required to satify the latest State of Texas training requirements for people working with youth.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
The Pack can't go camping unless we have at least one person who has completed BALOO at the campout! We especially need some leaders or parents of the younger cubs to attend.

BALOO is a fun one-day session where you learn about both the rules we have to follow and some guidelines for planning a fun and successful camping activity. You may see demonstrations of camping gear and will definitely learn a lot of tips from fellow Scouters.
